About iSEE
In 2013, the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE) was created to lead an interdisciplinary approach to researching solutions for the world’s pressing sustainability, energy, and environmental needs today and tomorrow. iSEE is one of 10 interdisciplinary research institutes that address global challenges under the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation.
Alongside our innovative research, iSEE aims to guide students in their journeys to become stewards of the environment through a variety of educational opportunities. Our institute is committed to helping the University of Illinois be a model for campus sustainability.
Our Vision
iSEE elevates the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as a pioneer in sustainability, energy, and environmental leadership. We achieve this through cutting-edge research, high-quality educational programs, high-profile events, and innovative campus sustainability initiatives.
Our Mission
At iSEE, we foster actionable, interdisciplinary research to tackle the core challenges in sustainability, energy, and the environment. Our commitment extends beyond research; we cultivate value-added and inclusive educational programming that nurtures the next generation of sustainability leaders. We strive to make our campus a leader in sustainability by strategically and collaboratively pursuing opportunities to become carbon neutral, eliminate waste, and sustainably manage our land, water, and other resources.
At the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, our purpose has always been clear: to put knowledge to work for the public good.
As part of that land-grant tradition, iSEE brings together more than 150 faculty members from across 50 departments to address the defining challenges of our time: climate change, energy transitions, food and water security, and environmental resilience.
Our strength lies in collaboration. Scientists, engineers, economists, and policy experts work together to translate research into action by transforming data into decisions, innovation into impact, and discoveries into lasting progress. From advancing renewable energy and regenerative agriculture to guiding climate adaptation and campus sustainability, iSEE helps Illinois lead by example.
This work reflects the mission that defines us: to serve society through science, education, and engagement. Together, we are shaping a future that is sustainable, equitable, and resilient — for Illinois, and for all.
