Dr. Rodríguez specializes in biological modeling, simulation, and analysis to ensure that complex food and agricultural systems operate efficiently and reliably, for the benefit of both society and the environment. Central to his approach lies a commitment to transdisciplinary (convergent) practice, acknowledging that grand challenge scale problems are inherently multi-faceted, providing novel research opportunities across various disciplines. Dr. Rodríguez mentors a diverse set of students representing disciplines across the campus in development of their technical skills as well as their ability to integrate human centered design, systems thinking, communication, project leadership, conflict resolution, and consensus building.

Gillen Wood

Director of the Certificate in Environmental Writing

Gillen Wood is the Robert W. Schaefer Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences with appointments in the Departments of English and Earth Science and Environmental Change. At iSEE, he served as Associate Director for Education and Outreach (2018-22). He co-founded the Certificate in Environmental Writing (CEW), which he directs, and edits its flagship publication, Q Magazine, dedicated to student environmental writing. He is the author of six books, including a recently completed “eco-trilogy” from Princeton University Press on nineteenth-century natural history and its relevance to the climate crisis.

Eric Green

Eric Green obtained both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and his M.S. in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences. He has worked for a fuel cell research start-up company, as an automated software test engineer at Motorola and a construction manager for Illinois’ own Red Oak Rain Garden before taking his current position as iSEE’s instructor for the Sustainability, Energy, and Environment Fellows Program (a campus-wide minor) in 2019.

Basia Nilges-Latawiec

Research Project Coordinator

Basia Nilges-Latawiec has served as a Research Project Coordinator at the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign since December 2021. She is the primary project manager for the SCAPES initiative, supporting interdisciplinary sustainability and agricultural research through project management, stakeholder engagement, and research administration. Basia also leads iSEE’s major outreach activities, including organizing the iSEE Congress and Critical Conversations, convening partners across academia, industry, government, and communities. She holds an M.S. in Business Administration and a B.S. in Integrative Biology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
